For many years I instinctively knew that fasting was a method that worked for my body, however I was not equipped with the knowledge and understanding of what was happening and why this was so important for my wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions
WATER
A water fast gives the body a break from digestion, allowing it to redirect energy toward healing, detoxification, and repair. By pausing food intake, the body naturally enters a deeper state of cellular cleansing, reducing inflammation, balancing hormones, and restoring clarity—both physically and mentally. It’s a chance to reset on every level.
Preparation is key. We use a “walk-in” approach that gradually reduces food volume and shifts toward hydrating, nutrient-dense choices before the fast begins. This primes your system, builds mineral reserves, and makes the transition smoother—mentally and physically. Proper preparation reduces detox symptoms and sets the foundation for a successful fast.
Breaking a fast requires as much care as starting one. We begin with simple, hydrating liquids like diluted fruit juices or coconut water, followed by light whole foods. Rushing back into heavy meals can overwhelm the system. The goal is to ease digestion back online, allowing your body to maintain the benefits of the fast and avoid discomfort.
FOOD
The purpose of a water fast is to give the body complete rest from digestion and external inputs, allowing it to shift fully into repair and detoxification. Introducing supplements, even if they contain no calories interrupts this process. When the body is properly prepared with mineral-rich, hydrating foods before the fast, supplements are unnecessary. Fasting is most effective when kept simple. There’s no need to “hack” the fast; the power is in the stillness and the absence.
It depends on the length of your fast. Generally, for every day fasted, allow at least one day (24hrs) of light eating before resuming heavier meals. The body needs time to adapt and digest efficiently again, so pacing your return ensures you avoid discomfort and retain the healing gains.
Yes, whist not advisable, you can still fast, but thoughtful preparation will make the process more comfortable. When the body is used to heavier, processed foods, the shift into fasting may take longer, and you might notice more pronounced detox symptoms at first. By simply improving your food choices in the days leading up to the fast focusing on hydration and lighter, whole foods, you support a smoother transition and allow your body to ease naturally into the fast.
No. Protein is just the material which your body only uses it to build muscle when you give it a reason. Without training, especially resistance work, there’s no signal for growth. Someone who’s inactive, even if eating a high-protein diet, will still lose muscle over time. Think of a person in a wheelchair if they aren’t using their legs, muscle will waste, no matter how much protein they consume. The body adapts to demand, not just diet.
Carbohydrates aren’t the enemy. It’s the type and source that matter. Whole-food carbs from fruits, vegetables, and certain grains provide energy, fibre, and essential nutrients. Refined carbs and processed sugars disrupt balance. The key is knowing which carbs nourish and which ones deplete.
No, fruit sugar, in its whole form is not harmful. The natural sugars in fruit come with fibre, water, vitamins, and enzymes that help your body process it efficiently. It’s refined sugars and isolated sweeteners that cause imbalance. Whole fruits are hydrating, cleansing, and energising when eaten properly, especially on an empty stomach or in simple combinations. It’s not just about sugar; it’s about the full package nature provides, and shouldn’t be confused with isolated high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and its negative impact on the human body.
FITNESS
This truly depends on the persons starting weight. The more body fat the more weight one should expect to lose. Slim people lose the least amount of weight whilst fasting.
Muscle mass loss during a fast is typically minimal. The reduction in water retention is often misconstrued as muscle loss. During fasting, intramuscular lipids are mobilised for gluconeogenesis and ketosis, contributing to what some perceive as muscle loss. However, in reality, muscles may appear more defined and firmer with less softness, not due to muscle loss but due to decreased water content.
You can return to training right after your fast, especially for strength work. Many find their muscles responsive and joints more fluid post-fast. Cardio endurance may feel lower at first, but this adjusts quickly with refeeding. The key is to listen—push where you feel strong, and rest when your body signals it. Fasting sharpens awareness, so trust what you feel.
Yes, and it’s more efficient than most think. Muscle growth depends on the body’s ability to repair tissue, which happens fastest in the absence of inflammation. A plant-based diet supports this by increasing oxygen availability, improving blood flow, and reducing internal resistance caused by heavy, acidic foods. This allows the body to prioritise recovery and growth without interference. Plant proteins, combined with the right training stimulus, provide everything needed without the burden of excess waste or delayed healing.
Set weekly milestones that lead toward your monthly targets. This keeps you focused and accountable, moving with purpose toward your larger goal. Whether it’s strength, endurance, flexibility, or mobility, breaking it down into manageable steps makes progress tangible. Motivation comes and goes whilst progress comes from routine. Build training into your lifestyle, celebrate small wins, and stay grounded in why you started. The more consistent you are, the less you’ll need to rely on motivation at all.
Both have their place, but they serve different purposes. Strength training builds muscle, improves metabolism, protects joints, and shapes the body. Cardio supports heart health, circulation, and endurance. The key is balance but if your goal is a strong, lean physique, strength should take priority. Look at the difference between a long-distance runner and a 100m sprinter: one is built for endurance, the other for power and definition. Cardio keeps you mobile, but strength changes how you carry yourself physically and energetically.
This program runs on a monthly auto-renewal basis to ensure uninterrupted support and progression which allows us to grow with you, adjusting your plan as your needs evolve. You can pause or cancel anytime—no pressure, no follow-up, no chasing.
HEALTH
For individuals with anaemia, it's crucial to approach fasting with caution. Fuelling the body with nutritious, unprocessed foods for weeks to months before beginning a fast is important. With Galapagos Healing, we emphasise teaching each group member the correct way to start and conclude a fast to minimise complications. This preparation is particularly important for those with anaemia to ensure their body is adequately nourished and to reduce any health risks associated with fasting.
Yes, fasting can aid in addressing fibroids and endometriosis, especially when combined with lifestyle changes that eliminate hormone-mimicking compounds from the body. The effectiveness also depends on the duration of the fast. Additionally, it's important to note that some vaginal bleeding during this process may not be menstrual but rather the uterus shedding and expelling tissue.
Fasting with diabetes can be safe under the close supervision of the Galapagos Healing team. Whilst water fasting, as no external glucose is consumed, the body switches to fat metabolism for energy through Gluconeogenesis. This process helps maintain blood sugar levels, preventing hypoglycemia and supporting glucose supply to vital organs, including the kidneys and male reproductive system. Another activated system is Ketosis which breaks down fat via the liver primarily to provide the brain and central nervous system with a more efficient source of energy called Ketones.
